Men's Soccer Blanks UMass Dartmouth, 1-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Sophomore midfielder Sawyer Fleck (Foxboro, Mass.) notched the lone goal of the game in 60th minute as Bridgewater State edged visiting UMass Dartmouth, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday evening at Swenson Field.

With tonight's win, Bridgewater State improves their overall record to 6-7-2 while UMD slips to 9-5.  The Bears are now 18-10-5 against the Corsairs since 1980 and hold a 7-2-1 advantage over the last 10 meetings.

UMass Dartmouth controlled a large portion of the first half out-shooting Bridgewater, 12-3.  The Corsairs found themselves with a few scoring opportunities especially in the last 15 minutes of the stanza.  BSU senior goalie, Matt Bagley (Braintree, Mass.) picked up six saves over the first 45 minutes.

The Corsairs had the best scoring chance in the opening period when freshman midfielder Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) rang the post in the 34th minute.

Bridgewater State came out strong to start the second half and notched the first three shots of the period.  After back-to-back fouls gave the Bears their second straight direct kick from just outside the 18, Fleck delivered a shot off the restart that deflected off the UMD wall and into the left side of the net.

Bridgewater would hold onto their one-goal advantage the rest of the way, but not without the Corsairs making some noise.  UMass would ring the post for the second time in the game as senior midfielder Adam Philbin's (Cumberland, R.I.) shot from point-blank range hit off of the right iron in the 78th minute.

Bagley finished with seven saves for the game including a leaping stop on a Corey Morris (Freehold, N.J.) shot in the last seconds of the opening stanza.  Freshmen goaltenders Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) and Andrew Deane (Woburn, Mass.) combined to make three saves for the Corsairs.

Both teams return to action at home on Saturday, both facing conference opponents.  UMass Dartmouth takes on Eastern Connecticut St. at 1:00.  Bridgewater State will play MCLA at 2:30 for their homecoming contest.
