Men's Soccer Blanks MCLA, 3-0, on Senior Day

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – On Senior Day at rain-soaked Swenson Field, the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team posted a 3-0 shutout over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe MCLA in the regular season finale for both teams.

The host Bears improve to 6-7-3 on the season and 3-1-3 in the MASCAC.  Bridgewater could potentially earn a spot in next week's MASCAC Tournament depending upon the outcome of this weekend's conference games.  MCLA ends the season with an overall record of 5-10-1 (1-5-1 MASCAC).

Senior midfielder Dan Roberts (Braintree, Mass.) notched his first goal of the season in the 34th minute as he scored off a rebound of a Braima Samati (Boston, Mass.) shot.  The Bears, who outshot the Trailblazers 12-5 in the first half and 24-7 for the game, took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

Freshman forward Steve McAvoy (Walpole, Mass.) gave Bridgewater a two-goal advantage in the 57th minute.  McAvoy received a pass from senior midfielder Donald Flores (Cranston, R.I.) inside the 18, settled the ball and drilled a shot into the left corner of the net.

Just over two minutes later, freshman defender Chris Naughton (Braintree, Mass.) tallied his first collegiate goal as he scored off a deflection of a Craig Shadduck (Braintree, Mass.) shot to give BSU the 3-0 lead.

Junior goaltender Joe Parsons (Springfield, Mass.) turned aside three shots to record his sixth win and sixth shutout of the season.  Sophomore Shawn Willis (Stephentown, N.Y.) made eight saves between the pipes for MCLA.

Prior to the game, Roberts, Flores and fellow BSU seniors DJ Siewierski (Stow, Mass.), Conor Kelley (Braintree, Mass.), Mike Fraser (Marshfield, Mass.) and Adam Smith (Kingston, Mass.) were honored.
