Men's Soccer Falls to UMass Dartmouth, 2-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The visiting UMass Dartmouth Corsairs posted a 2-0 victory over Bridgewater State University in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Swenson Field in Bridgewater.

UMass improves to 10-6-1 on the season while Bridgewater slips to 5-6-3.

Freshman forward Nick Gontijo (Hudson, Mass.) found the back of the net twice in the win for the Corsairs over their Southeastern Massachusetts rivals.  Gontijo opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play and then notched his team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 52nd minute to give UMass the 2-0 lead.

UMD junior goaltender Mike Phelan (Carver, Mass.) turned aside eight shots in 78 minutes and 45 seconds off work to record his seventh win of the season. Junior John Doucette (Boxford, Mass.) played the final 11:15 and was not forced to make a save.

Bridgewater held a 16-12 shot advantage for the game as well as a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.  Senior minder DJ Siewierski (Stow, Mass.) made two saves for the Bears in his first appearance this season.

Nine yellow cards were handed out in a very chippy contest with Bridgewater on the receiving end of five of those. The two teams were whistled for a total of 37 fouls.

Bridgewater travels to Wheaton College on Thursday afternoon (3:00) for a non-conference match with the Lyons.  UMass hosts Little East Conference foe Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon (3:00).
