Men's Soccer Blanks Salem State, 2-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Senior forward Adam Smith (Kingston, Mass.) and sophomore forward Craig Shadduck (Braintree, Mass.) tallied second half goals to lift the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 2-0 MASCAC victory over Salem State University on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater.

The host Bears even their 2011 overall record at 5-5-1 and improve to 2-1-1 in the MASCAC.  The Vikings fall to 6-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

BSU sophomore goaltender Joe Parsons (Springfield, Mass.) turned aside five shots to notch his fifth shutout of the season.

Despite outshooting the Vikings 12-2 in the opening stanza and holding a 6-0 edge in corner kicks, the Bears could not crack the scoreboard.  Salem State junior netminder Scott Hall (Waltham, Mass.) made all six of his saves in the first half to keep the game scoreless.

Smith finally got the Bears on the board at the 76:39 mark.  Senior midfielder Donald Flores (Cranston, R.I.) slid a pass to the right side and Smith beat Hall with a shot to the middle of the net.  Less than three minutes later, Shadduck headed a cross from Flores inside the far post to give BSU the 2-0 lead.

Flores increased his team-leading assist total to six with his two helpers.

Bridgewater held a 21-9 shot advantage for the game and attempted nine corner kicks opposed to just one for the Vikings.

Salem's best scoring chance came in the 81st minute when a Maxime Mondestin (Salem, Mass.) rebound of a Owen Quane (Weymouth, Mass.) shot was turned away by BSU senior midfielder Dan Roberts (Braintree, Mass.).

Bridgewater is off until next Saturday (1:00 PM) when the Bears travel to Framingham State University for a key MASCAC match with the Rams.  Salem hosts Daniel Webster College on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30.
