BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior midfielder Alejandro Sucre's (Caracas, Venezuela) second goal of the afternoon proved to be a dramatic one as it came with 2:48 remaining in the second overtime and propelled visiting Amherst to a 2-1 victory over host Bridgewater State in a non-conference men's soccer match on Sunday.

With the win, the nationally ranked Lord Jeffs push their mark to 2-0 on the young season while the Bears see their record level at 2-2.

Ranked 16th in the D3soccer.com Preseason Poll, Amherst won its second road game in as many days when Sucre headed home a cross off the foot of senior defender Sam Kaplan (Brunswick, Maine).

After a scoreless first half, Sucre opened the scoring early in the second stanza when he headed home a feed from senior midfielder Thebe Tsatsimpe (Johannesburg, South Africa) at 48:05. The host Bears answered back just over 12 minutes later off a restart when senior midfielder Donald Flores (Cranston, R.I.) delivered a pass to sophomore forward Craig Shadduck (Braintree, Mass.) who deposited his second goal of the year into the back of the net at 60:21.

Bridgewater State sophomore netminder Joe Parsons (Springfield, Mass.) was solid in between the pipes recording 13 saves on the day. The Bears defensive effort was aided when junior defender Jon Sampson (Plympton, Mass.) cleared a ball off the line in the 26th minute.

Lord Jeff's senior goalkeeper Lennard Kovacs (Wolfersdorf, Germany) was credited with six stops en route to earning the victory.

Amherst enjoyed a 26-11 edge in shots while taking 16 of the game's 21 corner kicks.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday with home conference openers. Bridgewater State, who will get a well-deserved rest after playing its fourth game in seven days to start the season, entertains MASCAC rival Westfield State at 5:00 PM. Amherst welcomes NESCAC foe Bates College to Western Mass. at 2:30.
