Kenneally's Overtime Winner Sends Men's Soccer to ECAC Semifinals

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior defender Pat Kenneally (Braintree, Mass.) scored a pair of goals including the game-winner in double overtime, as the top seeded Bridgewater State University men's soccer team posted a 3-2 victory over number eight Lesley University in the quarterfinals of the 2010 ECAC Division III New England Tournament on Wednesday night in Bridgewater.

Kenneally's overtime winner sends the Bears (13-5) into the semifinal round as they will take on number four seed Brandeis University on Saturday afternoon.  The semifinal and championship rounds will take place at Western New England College.  Lesley ends the season with a record of 15-3-1.

Senior midfielder Tyler Reeves (Coventry, Conn.) put the Lynx on the board at the 28:18 mark of the first half after a deflection caromed to junior midfielder Jonathan Jones-Takano (Tokyo, Japan), who spotted the senior midfielder for the strike.

Lesley held command for the remainder of the period, going into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

It took all of 17 seconds after halftime for the Bears to even the score. Kenneally fired a free kick from just over 20 yards on the left wing and hooked it inside the right post beyond the dive of outstretched goalkeeper Zachary Almeida-Beers (Rehoboth, Mass.).

Lesley threatened with quality chances in the minutes to come. Sophomore midfielder Ari Sinanis (Guilford, Conn.) was stoned by BSU junior netminder DJ Siewierski (Stow, Mass.) at the 35:20 mark, and the Bears' keeper made a diving save to get a left hand on a Jones-Takano strike with 34:20 left.

Moving to his right, Sinanis was denied just inside the ten minute mark, which would be Lesley's last opportunity before the Bears took their first lead of the night.

With just under seven minutes remaining, freshman forward Craig Shadduck (Braintree, Mass.) converted a breakaway opportunity off a perfectly placed through ball from senior midfielder Kazuhisa Miyata (Hyogo, Japan), putting the Bears on top, 2-1.

Ever the resilient bunch, Lesley evened the score just moments later off a corner kick as junior forward Joe Petit (Salem, Mass.) headed in the volley from Sinanis inside the right post.

An up and down overtime period gave way to a double-overtime controlled largely by the Bears, who spent the majority of the period in Lynx territory. A pushing foul on Lesley led to another free kick for Bridgewater in the 109th minute.  Off the restart Kenneally struck again, crushing the game-winning goal into the top right of the net.

Lesley held a 24-13 shot advantage for the game as well as a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.  Siewierski turned aside nine shots to earn his 11th win of the season.  Almeida-Beers made four saves between the pipes for Lesley.
