BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Junior forward Jose DePina (Boston, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the Bridgewater State University men's soccer team to a 4-0 shutout victory over non-conference foe Lasell College on Wednesday afternoon.
The Bears (7-2) also received a goal and an assist from sophomore forward Simao Mendes (Brockton, Mass.) and a pair of helpers from junior midfielder Donald Flores (Cranston, R.I.).
DePina opened the scoring in the 11th minute. On a restart, Flores sent a cross that was flicked by Mendes inside the 18 to an open DePina who tapped the ball into the empty net. 37 seconds later, Mendes converted a penalty kick after freshman forward Craig Shadduck (Braintree, Mass.) was pulled down inside the 18.
DePina notched his second marker of the game and his team-leading ninth of the season in the 20th minute with a shot inside the near post. Flores picked up his second assist of the match after a long volleyball off a restart from 25 yards out.
Junior forward Mike Fraser (Marshfield, Mass.) tallied the only goal of the second half, his fifth of the season, in the 73rd minute. Fraser beat a Lasell defender cutting across the 18 and ripped a left-footed shot past the goalie.
Junior goaltender DJ Siewierski (Stow, Mass.) turned aside seven shots to record his third shutout of the season. Lasell junior Matthew Bruninghaus (Plymouth, Mass.) notched a pair of saves in the loss for the Lasers.
Shots were fairly even with the Lasers holding a narrow 14-13 advantage as well as a slight 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Bridgewater will entertain Worcester State University on Saturday at noon in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference match. Lasell (4-4) travels to Suffolk University on Saturday to take on the Rams at 4:00 PM.
