Men's Soccer Remains Unbeaten in MASCAC Play with 3-1 Win

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Senior Luke Brewer (Edgartown, MA) netted a pair of goals and freshman Simao Mendes (Brockton, MA) notched a goal and an assist to help lead Bridgewater State to a 3-1 triumph this afternoon over Worcester State in MASCAC men's soccer action at Coughlin Field.

With the win the Bears improve to 7-4-1 and remain unbeaten at 4-0 in the conference while the Lancers slip to 1-10-2 and 0-2-2 in MASCAC play.

Bridgewater State opened the game with a quick 1-0 lead as Brewer registered an unassisted marker 20 seconds into the contest when he corralled a rebounded shot from the defense past WSC sophomore keeper Evan Wilga (Dudley, MA).

Over the next 30 minutes BSC continued to apply pressure as they held a 5-1 shot advantage with four shots on goal. In that same span of time, Bridgewater's defense did a great job of keeping Worcester State on their own side of the yellow line until the 31st minute when the Lancers had a great opportunity to knot the game up. Senior Miguel Vidal (N. Grafton, MA) received a nice pass from junior Dan Anthony (Leominster, MA), but his bid hit the right post.

Bridgewater State remained on the offensive for the remaining minutes of the stanza as they outshot the hosts 4-1.

The Bears picked up right where they left off in the second half as they scored 14 minutes apart to push the advantage to 3-0. In the 52nd, Mendes hit home an unassisted marker for his sixth goal of the year and in the 66th Mendes found Brewer on the left side for Brewers team-leading seventh tally.

Worcester State then buckled down on the offensive end and broke the shutout bid in the 83rd minute when senior Mark Johnson (Woburn, MA) in the left corner found Vidal on the right side of the net.

The Lancers tried everything they could to score again, but their three shots were high, wide of the net and the last one was rejected by senior keeper Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA).

Bridgewater State held a 18-10 shot advantage and a 2-1 edge in corners. Wilga recorded nine saves while Seifert stopped five of the six shots he saw in net.

Worcester State looks to snap a nine-game winless streak when they entertain Becker on "Senior Day" at 7 PM on Wednesday while Bridgewater State takes the week off as they host Salem State next Saturday at noon.
