Brewer Nets OT Winner as Men's Soccer Edges MCLA, 2-1

Box Score

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Senior forward Luke Brewer (Edgartown, MA) tallied the game-winning goal with just 1:35 remaining in the second overtime period to life the Bridgewater State College men's soccer team to a dramatic 2-1 victory over Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe MCLA this afternoon at Swenson Field in Bridgewater.

The game marked the MASCAC opener for both teams as BSC improved to 3-3 overall (1-0 MASCAC) while MCLA dropped to 3-1 (0-1 MASCAC) after suffering its' first setback of the season.

Sophomore forward Chris Swindell (Milford, MA) also scored for the Bears who led 1-0 with under ten minutes remaining in regulation.  Swindell's goal, his third of the season, came less than eight minutes into the contest.

Freshman forward Jake McCall (Lincoln, RI) provided the equalizing goal for the Trailblazers as he potted his fourth goal of the season in the 83rd minute of play.

The match seemed destine for a draw as the clock winded down in the second overtime period.  BSC had other ideas, however, as sophomore midfielder Jose DePina (Boston, MA) and freshman forward Simao Mendes (Brockton, MA) combined to set up Brewer's game-winner.   Off a punt, Mendes headed the ball to DePina who trapped the ball and fed a pass to a wide open Brewer.  Brewer promptly rifled a shot under the crossbar and just over the outstretched hand of the MCLA keeper.

Mendes assisted on both of BSC's goals as he now has four goals and three assists on the season for a team-leading 11 points.

Senior goaltender Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) turned aside nine shots to post his third win of the season and 15th of his career.  Seifert's counterpart, fellow senior Evan Coe (Hopewell Junction, NY), made ten saves between the pipes for the Trailblazers.

Bridgewater State travels to Rhode Island College for a non-conference game with the Anchormen on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30.  MCLA travels to Castleton State College on Tuesday for a seven o'clock match with the Spartans.
