Men's Soccer Blanks Mass. Maritime, 3-0

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Junior forward Luke Brewer (Edgartown, MA) tallied a goal and an assist, and senior goaltender Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) notched his seventh shutout of the season, to lead the Bridgewater State College men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over MASCAC rival Mass. Maritime Academy this afternoon in Bridgewater.

The win clinches the third seed in the upcoming MASCAC Tournament for the Bears who improve to 11-4-2 on the year and 4-2-1 in the MASCAC.  Mass. Maritime wraps up the 2008 season with a record of 5-11-2 overall and 1-6 in conference play. Bridgewater is now 23-5-2 versus the Buccaneers since 1980.

Brewer opened the scoring in the fifth minute of play as he scored his fourth goal of the season off a cross from senior forward Jon Nutting (Rockland, MA).  The score would remain 1-0 through the intermission.

Just over three minutes into the second half, junior midfielder Peter Wahlgren (Shrewsbury, MA) headed in a perfectly executed cross from Brewer to give BSC the 2-0 lead.  Freshman forward Chris Swindell (Milford, MA) made it a 3-0 game at the 80-minute mark as he got behind the Mass. Maritime defense and scored on a breakaway.

Seifert was forced to make just one save in the shutout effort as the Bears held a 20-7 advantage in shots as well as a 10-3 edge in corner kicks.

Prior to the game, the Bears honored seniors Jon Machado (Weymouth, MA), Jon Nutting and Jarrett Sorge (West Boylston, MA) who were playing in their final regular season home game.

Bridgewater will await word on their opponent for the semifinal round of the MASCAC Tournament which gets underway on Wednesday.  The Bears would play either Framingham State or Salem State depending upon the outcome of today's games.
