SALEM, Mass. -- Junior forward Andrew Angus scored late in the first half to lift the Salem State College Vikings to a 1-0 shutout victory over visiting Bridgewater State College in a Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) match played at Alumni Field.
With just 1:33 remaining in the opening stanza, Angus blasted home freshman forward Matt Figueiredo's pass from seven yards out past the dive of Bridgewater State goalkeeper Ryan Seifert.
Bridgewater (9-3-2 overall; 3-1-1 MASCAC) outshot the Vikings, 6-5, in the second after SSC held an 8-6 first half edge. SSC senior goalkeeper Pawel Brzykcy, who made four saves on the way to posting his sixth shutout of the season, was solid between the pipes making a pair of big saves with his team holding the lead throughout the second half.
Seifert made six stops for the Bears who dropped their first conference match. Bridgewater held an 8-4 margin in corner kick opportunities.
SSC's next match will be Wednesday, October 22 when the Vikings (10-2-1 overall; 4-1 MASCAC) play host to the Elms College Blazers in a 6:30 pm non-conference contest at Alumni Field.
Bridgewater is off until next Saturday when the Bears host Framingham State at 10 AM.
