WESTFIELD, Mass. - Sophomore reserve forward
Mike Fraser (Marshfield, MA) scored in the 37th
minute to lift Bridgewater State College to a 1-0 victory over
Westfield State in a key early-season Massachusetts State College
Athletic Conference (MASCAC) men's soccer game on Sunday afternoon,
Sept. 28.
The Bears improved to 5-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the conference;
Westfield is 4-2-1 and 0-1-1.
Bridgewater controlled the ball for much of the first half,
outshooting Westfield, 10-3. The Bears scored with exactly eight
minutes remaining in the stanza, as Fraser tapped in a cross from
Jarrett Sorge (West Boyleston, MA) in the box.
The teams played on even terms in the second half, with Bridgewater
outshooting Westfield, 8-7. The Owls had a major scoring
opportunity thwarted with 3:23 remaining in regulation when
Brigewater goalie Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) made a
spectacular save on a wicked shot from 20 yards out by Josh
Silvia (South Windsor, CT). Silvia rifled the shot just a
foot beneath the post but Seifert skied high for the deflection.
Seifert was forced to make just two saves to record his third shutout of the season. Westfield goalie Mike Thompson (Feeding Hills, MA) made five saves for the Owls.
