Bristol, R.I. - The Bridgewater State College men's soccer team captured the Roger Williams University Turfer Classic championship with a 2-0 shutout win over host Roger Williams this afternoon in Bristol, Rhode Island.

Donald Flores (Cranston, RI) broke a scoreless tie early in the second half as he notched his first goal of the season.  The sophomore forward launched a deep shot from 20 feet outside of the box in the 46th minute. Hawk goalie Peter Plate (Commack, NY) was able to leap and get a hand on the ball, but did not have enough reach to knock it away, as the ball trickled over his head and into the back of the net.

The Bears followed that up with another score twenty minutes later, as senior forward Jon Nutting (Rockland, MA) notched a goal in the 66th minute off of a pass by Flores.

Tough, physical play and a stifling defense by both teams marked the play of a scoreless first half, with both teams only managing four shots apiece in the period, not to mention the fact that the Hawks and Bears combined for 21 fouls in the opening stanza alone.

BSC senior netminder Ryan Seifert (Ludlow, MA) needed to make only one save on the day to earn his first shutout of the season.

Flores was named the tournament's Offensive Most Valuable Player, while Seifert earned Defensive MVP honors.  Joining them on the All-Tournament Team from BSC were junior midfielder Matt Daniels (South Easton, MA) and freshman midfielder Dan Roberts (Braintree, MA).

For the Hawks, Dan Saccoccio (Holtsville, NY), Archie Maoh (Monrovia, Liberia), and Jared Falconer (Ludlow, MA) were each named to the All-Tournament Team for their play over the weekend.

The win was the 56th coaching victory at Bridgewater State for Head Coach Brendan Adams, as he is now tied with Luis Reis (1992-1996) for first place on the Bears' all-time coaching wins list.  Adams has a career record of 56-49-10 in his seven seasons at the helm of the BSC men's soccer program.

Bridgewater State (2-0) hosts Wheaton College on Wednesday at 4 PM, while Roger Williams takes on Wheaton on Saturday at 1.
