Men's Basketball Falls to UMass Dartmouth, 100-64

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth men's basketball team cruised to a 100-64 victory over visiting Bridgewater State University on Tuesday night at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The Corsairs picked up their first win of the season as they improve to 1-4. The Bears fall to 2-4 with their third straight setback.

Sophomore guard John Marcille (Rehoboth, Mass.) posted a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds (five offensive) to lead the way for UMass. Marcille went 9-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-9 from three-point range.

Sophomore guard Nic Boyd (Portland, Ore.) added 23 points on 6 of 13 shooting from behind the arc in 28 minutes off the bench for the Corsairs who also received 17 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots from senior guard Isaac Percy (Pittsfield, Mass.) as well as double-double totals of 15 points and ten boards from graduate forward Jackson Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.). Sophomore center Ryan Flauto (Whitinsville, Mass.) checked in with eight points, on 4 of 4 shooting, and a game-high 13 rebounds (three offensive) in 19 minutes off the bench. Sophomore guard Josh Lopes (Taunton, Mass.) dished out a game-best 11 assists.

Sophomore guard Dante Kikuba (Framingham, Mass.) paced Bridgewater State with 13 points, nine rebounds (five offensive), four assists and three steals. Freshman forward Josh Campbell (Plymouth, Mass.) and junior forward Keyth Key (Springfield, Mass.) added eight points apiece for the Bears while sophomore guard Nicolas Bontemps (Coral Springs, Fla.) contributed seven points, seven rebounds (two offensive), five assists and three steals in 19 minutes off the bench.

Leading 16-10 with 13:26 remaining in the first half, the Corsairs erupted for 10-0 straight points in a span of just 76 seconds to open up a 16-point advantage. Zancan score the first four points of the 10-0 run while Boyd capped it off with back-to-back three-pointers. UMass got up by as many as 20 points (37-17) in the opening stanza and took a 44-27 lead into the break.

The Bears got as close as 13 points in the early stages of the second half including a 48-35 deficit following a Campbell layup with 16:20 remaining in the session. The Corsairs, however, put the game out of reach with a 13-0 run jumpstarted by a pair of Marcille three-pointers and capped off by a Boyd trifecta. UMass led by as many as 41 points (90-49) the rest of the way and coasted to the 100-64 win.

The Bears struggled with their shooting throughout the evening connecting on 34.6% (28-81) of their field goal attempts including just 2-for-27 (7.4%) from three-point range. Bridgwater also went 6-for-19 (31.6%) at the free throw line.

Defensively, the Bears gave up 100 (or more) points for the second time this season. BSU's opponents are averaging 93.5 points over the first six games.

UMass shot 47% (39-83) from the floor and knocked down 14 of 42 (33%) three-point attempts. The Corsairs also finished 8-for-12 (66.7%) at the charity stripe.

Notes: UMass has won seven of the last eight meetings of the two teams....The Corsairs are 37-13 versus the Bears since 1973.

Up Next: Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon at one o'clock. The Bears travel to Wheaton College to take on the Lyons while the Corsairs entertain the Jumbos of Tufts University.
