Men's Basketball Drops 77-56 Decision to Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Guilford College men's basketball team used a dominating performance in the paint and on the glass as the host Quakers downed Bridgewater State University, 77-56, on Friday night at the Guilford Holiday Classic.

Guilford improves to 9-2 with their fourth straight win, while the visiting Bears fall to 7-4. Bridgewater went 1-1 at the tournament and snapped a four-game winning streak.

The Quakers held a sizable advantage in points in the paint (44-12) as well as rebounds (47-28) and second chance points (21-8).

Sophomore forward Marcus Curry (Greensboro, N.C.) scored 14 points on 5 of 6 shooting in 17 minutes off the bench to pace Guilford. Curry also grabbed five rebounds.

Three other players finished in double-figure scoring for the Quakers. Sophomore forward Alston Thompson (Durham, N.C.) tallied 13 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds, while junior forward Dominique Henderson (Charlotte, N.C.) notched 12 points and six boards and sophomore forward Carson Long (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) registered 11 points and five rebounds.

Curry and Thompson were named to the All-Tournament Team with Curry garnering MVP honors.

Junior guard Rocky DeAndrade (Mansfield, Mass.) led the way for Bridgewater State with a game-best 15 points in addition to three rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Senior guard Fawaz Mass (Taunton, Mass.) added 13 points for the Bears, while junior forward Joseph Carty (Natick, Mass.) contributed six points and a team-best six rebounds before fouling out late in the game. Mass and Carty were selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Guilford held a 31-26 advantage at the break and led 55-48 with eight minutes remaining in the second half. The Quakers outscored the Bears 12-2 over the next 4 1/2 minutes to take control of the game. Six different players accounted for the 12 points for Guilford during the run, while Bridgewater went 0-for-4 from the floor and turned the ball over twice during that span.

The Quakers continued to build on to their lead and got up by as many as 23 points (77-54) before settling for the 77-56 victory.

Guilford shot 47% (29-62) from the floor and converted 16 of 23 (70%) free throw attempts. Bridgewater struggled with its shooting throughout the contest as the Bears made just 17 of 53 (32%) field goals. The visitors went 6-for-20 (30%) from behind the arc and 16-for-23 (70%) at the charity stripe.

The Bears are back in action on Tuesday night when they host Bowdoin College at six.
