Men's Basketball Falls to UMass Dartmouth, 85-65

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth men's basketball team downed visiting Bridgewater State University, 85-65, on Thursday night at the Tripp Athletic Center.

Four Corsairs scored in double figures led by senior Jordan Rezendes (Onset, Mass.) who produced 29 points including seven 3-pointers while dishing out a game-high six assists. Freshman Atakan Akcam (Hoosac Falls, N.Y.) grabbed a game and season-high 11 rebounds.

Sophomore Joseph Carty (Natick, Mass.) paced the Bears with 15 points and eight rebounds. Junior Fawaz Mass (Taunton, Mass.) added 13 points, while freshman Ryan Carney (Easton, Mass.) also contributed 13.

The Bears registered the first bucket of the contest for their only lead of the evening. The Corsairs used a 19-0 run from the 16-minute to 11-minute marks to take a 22-point lead, which held throughout the stanza. UMass Dartmouth led 48-26 at the break with Rezendes scoring 21 of his 29 points in the first half.

The Bears came out strong to open the second half, outscoring the Corsairs 14-6 over the first five minutes led by six points from Mass. UMass, however, was able to keep the Bears at bay for the rest of the half, maintaining a lead of at least 19 points from the 13:18 mark on.

Also securing double-digit point marks for the Corsairs were junior Jon Robinson (Chatham, Mass.) with 13 points, while classmate Jahleel Moise (Brockton, Mass.) scored 10 while contributing five assists. Junior Abi Akanni (Fitchburg, Mass.) scored all of his 11 points in the second half.

The Corsairs shot 32-of-69 (46%) from the field, making 10-of-22 (45%) attempts from long range.

The Bears connected on just 37% (23-62) of their field goal attempts and went 5-for-17 (29%) from behind the arc.

UMass Dartmouth returns to Little East Conference play on Saturday, traveling to meet unbeaten Keene State at 3 p.m. Bridgewater State will also be in action Saturday as they host Wheaton at 1 p.m.
