Michael Lofton Named MASCAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second straight week, third time this season and an impressive eighth time in his career, Bridgewater State University senior forward Michael Lofton has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Lofton posted a double-double with 23 pointsand 10 rebounds while shooting 60 percent (6-10) from the floor and 79 percent (11-14) at the free throwline in the Bears’ 84-77 overtime victory over #15 ranked MIT.  The Mansfield, Massachusetts product also added four assists, three steals and a blocked shot as he became the Bears’ all-time leader in blocks with 134 surpassing Peter Santos' (2001-05) previous mark of 133.

In six games this season, Lofton is averaging 19.7 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.7 blocks and 1.5 steals.  He is also shooting 64% (43-67) from the floor and 73% (32-44) at the free throw line.

Lofton leads the MASCAC in scoring and field goal percentage while ranking second in the conference in rebounding, third in blocked shots, sixth in assists and steals, and eighth in free throw shooting.

In 87 games over four seasons with the Bears, Lofton has amassed 1,141 points, 700 rebounds, 143 assists, 134 blocked shots and 156 steals.  He is currently the Bears' all-time leader in field goal percentage (.632) and blocks, and also ranks 22nd amongst the team's career scoring leaders.

The  BSU men's basketball team is currently 5-3 on the young season. The Bears will take on Manhattanville College on Friday, January 2nd (4:00 PM) and host New York University on Saturday, January 3rd (2:00 PM) at the NYU Holiday Classic.
