Johnson, Fortes Named to All-MASCAC Men's Basketball Team

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State University senior center Samuel Johnson (North Chelmsford, Mass.) and senior forward Anthony Fortes (Providence, R.I.) have been selected to the 2011-2012 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men’s Basketball All-Conference Team.

Johnson and Fortes both earned All-MASCAC Second Team honors and are making their first appearance on the all-conference team.

Johnson is averaging 13.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 0.9 blocks in 20 games this season while shooting 51% (97-192) from the floor and 78% (83-107) at the free throw line.  He currently ranks fourth in the MASCAC in free throw shooting, fifth in rebounding and field goal percentage, eighth in both scoring and blocks, and tenth in steals.

In 70 games over three seasons at Bridgewater State, Johnson has amassed 596 points, 411 rebounds, 77 assists, 98 steals and 64 blocks.  He set the Bears’ single-season record for field goal percentage (.648) a season ago and is currently second all-time in program history with a .547 (232-404) career mark.

Fortes has appeared in 23 games this season with per game totals of 14.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.4 steals.  He ranks seventh among the conference leaders in scoring as well as eighth in both assists and three-point shooting (.325) and ninth in minutes played (700).

In 78 games covering two seasons at Bridgewater State and one at Rhode Island College, Fortes has recorded 820 points, 348 rebounds, 150 assists and 90 steals.

The Bridgewater State men’s basketball team is currently 14-10 on the season with a 9-3 mark in MASCAC play.  The Bears are seeded second in the MASCAC Tournament and will host third-seeded Westfield State in the semifinal round on Thursday night at seven.
