Joe Savignano Named MASCAC Football Special Teams Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior placekicker Joe Savignano has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Football Special Teams Player of the Week.

Savignano made a clutch field goal in the Bears’ 33-27 overtime setback to #15 Alfred University in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament this past weekend. The Brockton, Massachusetts product knocked home a 43-yarder in tough weather conditions with just 55 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime. He also averaged 57 yards on five kickoffs against the Saxons.

Savignano, who joined the team prior to the week 12 game against Framingham State University, averaged 53.7 yards on 16 kickoffs over three games this season. The field goal against Alfred marked the first of his collegiate career.

The BSU football team finished the season with an overall record of 8-3 including a perfect 8-0 MASCAC mark. The Bears, who captured their first conference title since 2000, advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament for the fourth time in program history (1999, 2000, 2012, 2016).
