Malik Garrett Named MASCAC Football Offensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University junior running back Malik Garrett has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Football Defensive Player of the Week.

Garrett rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 23 carries and hauled in four receptions for 70 yards and another score in the Bears' MASCAC clinching 28-27 overtime win over defending champion Framingham State University.

The Dorchester, Massachusetts product scored on runs of 50 and one yard, and caught a 24-yard touchdown pass. Garrett scored the game-tying touchdown in overtime with the one-yard run, and the Bears would go on to win the game with the ensuing PAT.

The conference title marks the Bears' first since 2000, when the team competed in the New England Football Conference (NEFC), and third overall (1999, 2000, 2016). With the win, Bridgewater earned an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Tournament as the Bears will be making their fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2012.

Through nine games this season, Garrett has rushed for 380 yards and nine touchdowns and caught 24 passes for 241 yards and three more scored.  He is also averaging 24.4 yards on ten kickoff returns.

Garrett is currently tied for the MASCAC lead in both scoring (74 pts.) and touchdowns (12). He also ranks sixth among the conference leaders in all-purpose yards (884).

In three seasons with the Bears, Garrett has rushed for 647 yards and 12 touchdowns, and hauled in 36 receptions for 374 yards and four touchdowns. He has accumulated 1,575 all-purpose yards and has also thrown for 191 yards and a score.

The BSU football team is currently 7-2 on the season and a perfect 7-0 in the MASCAC. Winners of seven straight games, the Bears wrap up regular season play on Saturday at noon when they host Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the 38th Annual Cranberry Bowl presented by Ocean Spray.
