Bridgewater State to Face Carnegie Mellon in ECAC Bowl Game

By Jim Fenton, The Enterprise (Brockton)

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University football season has been extended by a game.

The Bears (7-3) were chosen on Monday to play in one of six ECAC Division 3 bowl games.

BSU will travel to New Britain, Conn., to face Carnegie Mellon University of Pittsburgh at noon on Sunday in the Legacy Bowl.

For the first time, the ECAC is holding six bowl games at Central Connecticut State College beginning on Friday afternoon.

The Bears have won five of their past six games and finished tied for second place in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference.

With a young team, the chance to play in the postseason will benefit them heading into 2016.

"I'm happy for the guys,'' said coach Chuck Denune. "They earned it. I'm glad they're getting this opportunity.

"This is really one of those years where it could really catapult us into next season a little bit.

"We get another week to work with the young guys, and it gives the seniors a chance to compete for a championship.''

This marks the 10th postseason game for BSU – seventh in the ECACs and three in the NCAA tournament.

"It's just such a great experience,'' said Denune. "You wait all year for August to come and then it feels like it goes by so quick. To create another chance for a memory is great.''

This will be the first meeting between BSU and Carnegie Mellon (7-3), which finished in a tie for third place in the Presidents Athletic Conference at 6-2 after being selected eighth in the preseason poll.

The Tartans averaged 40.7 points and 487.2 yards per game.

Quarterback Andrew Hearon has thrown for 1,912 yards and 24 touchdowns while running back Sam Benger has 1,897 yards and 18 TDs.
