Mike McCarthy Named MASCAC Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University senior quarterback Mike McCarthy has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week.  McCarthy shares the weekly honor along with Western Connecticut State University senior running back Octavias McKoy.

McCarthy amassed 386 yards of total offense and accounted for seven touchdowns in the Bears' 56-28 MASCAC win at Plymouth State on Saturday.  The Edgartown, Massachusetts native completed 18 of 29 passes for a career-high 276 yards and tied the school record for touchdown passes with five.  He added 110 yards on the ground and two touchdowns on 19 carries.

McCarthy rushed for scores of three and four yards, and connected on touchdown strikes of 21, 29, 42, 18 and ten yards.  Three of his touchdowns passes went to junior wideout Matt Green (Stoughton, Mass.) in the first half during a 28-0 BSU run which put the game out of reach.  McCarthy also surpassed the 4,000-yard passing plateau as he became just the fourth quarterback in BSU football history to reach the milestone joining Dan Maurer (4,628), BSU Hall of Famer Vince Hickey (4,530) and Adam Camobreco (4,407).

In seven games this season, McCarthy has passed for a career-high 1,438 yards and 14 touchdowns while rushing for 569 yards and 11 scores.  He ranks second in the MASCAC in passing yards, passing touchdowns and rushing touchdowns, and is third in completions (91) and fifth in rushing yards.

In 37 games over four seasons with the Bears, McCarthy has thrown for 4,110 yards and 37 touchdowns while producing a QB rating of 114.34.  He has also rushed for 2,525 yards and 36 touchdowns and is by far the Bears’ all-time leader in total offense with 6,635 yards. McCarthy also ranks second all-time at BSU in pass completions (315), third in passing touchdowns and completion percentage (.495), fourth in passing yards, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns, seventh in scoring (216 pts.) and eighth in QB rating.

The BSU football team is currently 4-3 on the season with a 3-2 MASCAC record.  Next week, McCarthy and his teammates will entertain Westfield State University at one in the Bears’ Homecoming Game.
