Mike McCarthy Named ECAC Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- For the second time this season, Bridgewater State University senior quarterback Mike McCarthy has been selected as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Football Co-Offensive Player of the Week.  McCarthy shares the weekly honor along with senior quarterback Kevin Fruwirth of Curry College.

The MVP of the 35th Annual Cranberry Bowl, McCarthy recorded 392 yards of total offense and accounted for three touchdowns in the Bears' 45-20 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday.  The Edgartown, Massachusetts native rushed for 119 yards and touchdowns of five and six yards while completing 20 of 30 passes for 273 yards and a 33-yard scoring strike to junior receiver Matthew Green (Stoughton, Mass.).

With his 273 passing yards, McCarthy increased his career total to 4,672 as he eclipsed Dan Maurer's (1996-99) all-time mark of 4,628 yards. McCarthy also joined former standout quarterback Adam Camobreco (2002-05) as one of only two players in BSU football history to pass for 2,000 yards in a season as he finished the 2013 campaign with exactly 2,000 yards through the air.  Camobreco holds the Bears' single-season mark with 2,119 passing yards in 2005.

Also in the win over the Buccaneers, McCarthy set the Bears' single-game (20), single-season (137) and career (361) records for pass completions.

In ten games this season, McCarthy rushed for a team-best 850 yards and 17 touchdowns, while completing 137 of 229 passes for 2,000 yards and 18 scores.  He currently ranks second in the MASCAC in passing yards and QB rating (149.52), and third in rushing touchdowns, passing touchdowns, completion percentage (.598) and scoring (102 pts.).  McCarthy is also fourth in the conference in pass completions and rushing attempts, and fifth in rushing yards.

Among the Division III leaders in 2013, McCarthy is tied for sixth nationally in points responsible for (210 pts.) and tied for 16th in rushing touchdowns.

In 41 games over four seasons as the Bears' starting signal-caller, McCarthy completed 361 of 717 passes for 4,672 yards and 41 touchdowns, and added 2,806 yards and 42 scores on the ground.  He is by far the program's all-time leader in total offense with 7,478 yards.  Maurer is second on the Bears' all-time list with 6,127.

McCarthy also ranks second in Bridgewater State football history in rushing touchdowns and attempts (670), third in rushing yards, passing touchdowns and completion percentage (.503), and fourth in scoring (252 pts.).
