Baseball Wraps Up Myrtle Beach Trip with 9-2 Win over Berks

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team wrapped up play at The Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach as the Bears posted a 9-2 win over Penn State Berks on Friday morning.

The Bears improve to 3-4 on the season.

Matthew Seavey (North Attleboro, Mass.) worked the first five innings to pick up the win on the mound. Seavey (1-0) gave up just one run on three hits with four walks and four strikeouts. He also hit a batter.

Jay Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, a run and three RBI to pace the BSU offense. Ryan Flaherty (Duxbury, Mass.) also recorded mutliple hits with a pair of singles and a run in five at bats.

Wladkowski opened the scoring with a two-run double in the Bears' six-run third inning. Danny Jasmin (East Meadow, N.Y.) added a two-run single in the frame. Four of the six runs were unearned due to three Nittany Lion errors.

Penn State pushed across a run in the bottom of the third on a Griffin Kay RBI single. The Nittany Lions added a run in the sixth on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 6-2.

The score remained that way until the top of the eighth. Kyle Suraci (Clinton, Conn.) led off the inning with a walk, moved to third on a one out double by Kevin Lindsay (East Bridgewater, Mass.), and raced home on a Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.) squeeze bunt. Wladkowski followed with an RBI double plating Lindsay with Emerson also coming across on a throwing error.

Ricky Peters suffered the loss on the hill for Berks. Peters gave up six runs, only one of which was earned, on six hits over seven innings with no walks and four strikeouts.

The Bears are off until Saturday, March 16th when they entertain Gordon College in a doubleheader starting at noon.
