Baseball Downs Curry, 6-1

MILTON, Mass. – The visiting Bridgewater State University baseball team posted a 6-1 victory over Curry College on Wednesday afternoon at Vallely Diamond.

The Bears improve to 8-5 on the season, while the Colonels fall to 6-4.

Junior righthander Matthew Seavey (North Attleboro, Mass.) picked up his team-leading third win of the season for the Bears as he tossed six strong innings. Seavey (3-1) allowed just one run on four hits and pair of walks with seven strikeouts.

Sophomore right fielder Jay Wladkowski (Norwood, Mass.) paced the Bears' 12-hit attack as he went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a walk and two runs batted in.

Junior designated hitter Sean Goudey (Weymouth, Mass.), sophomore centerfielder Shane Foley (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior third baseman Joey Molis (Cumberland, R.I.) also recorded multiple hits for Bridgewater State. Goudey doubled and singled in five at bats, while Foley was 2-for-5 at the plate with a stolen base, a run and two RBI. Molis reached safely three times as he went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles, a walk, run and an RBI.

The Bears opened the scoring in the top of third inning. Freshman second baseman Scott Emerson (Peabody, Mass.) singled with one out, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Wladkowski's RBI double.

The BSU offense erupted for five runs in top of the fifth. Sophomore left fielder Joe Frechette (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore catcher Mathew Pigeon (Canton, Mass.) started the rally with back-to-back single with Frechette crossing the plate on an RBI double by Molis. After an out, Foley rapped a two-run single down the left field line to make it a 4-0 game. An Emerson sacrifice fly and another RBI double by Wladkowski capped off the scoring in the frame.

Curry got on the board in home half of the fifth as sophomore shortstop Ryan Goonan (Raynham, Mass.) singled with one out, moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on senior first baseman Jason Leonard's (Dedham, Mass.) RBI single.

Graduate righthander Matt Josselyn (Hanson, Mass.) came on in relief of Seavey in the seventh and set the side down in order on 13 pitches including a strikeout. Junior righty Tyler Dasilva-Medeiros (Taunton, Mass.) retired all six batters he faced to close out the game for the Bears. Dasilva-Medeiros recorded a pair of strikeouts and 16 of the 21 pitches he threw were for strikes.

Graduate righthander Phil Ledwith (Old Saybrook, Conn.) pitched effectively in the setback for the Colonels. Ledwith (1-1) gave up just one run on four hits over five innings of work with three walks and six strikeouts.

The Bears are off until next Tuesday afternoon when they travel to Roger Williams University to take on the Hawks at 3:30. The Colonels open Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play on Saturday morning when they host a doubleheader with Suffolk University starting at 11:00 AM.
