Liam Bell Named MASCAC Baseball Rookie of the Week

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Bridgewater State University freshman second baseman Liam Bell has been selected as the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) GEICO Baseball Rookie of the Week. GEICO is the proud sponsor of the MASCAC weekly awards program.

Bell batted .320 (8-25) with a pair of doubles, five runs scored and five RBI in a 3-2 week for the Bears. The Wells, Maine product recorded at least one hit in all five games as he extended his season-long hitting streak to 14.

Bell went 2-for-6 with a double, two runs and an RBI in a 13-5 MASCAC win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy and 3-for-5 with a run scored in a 6-2 non-conference setback to Johnson & Wales University. He also went 3-for-14 with a double, two runs and four RBI in a three-game MASCAC series against Worcester State University as the Bears took two of three from the Lancers.

Through 14 games this season, Bell is batting .379 (22-58) with six doubles, five walks, five stolen bases, 14 runs scored and 12 runs batted in. He is also sporting a .429 on base percentage and a .483 slugging percentage. Bell is presently tied for fourth in the MASCAC in doubles, tied for eighth in hits, and ranks ninth in the conference in batting average.

Bell is the Bears' second MASCAC Rookie of the Week award winner this season. Classmate Ruben Gonzalez (Stoughton, Mass.) earned the honor on March 18th.

The BSU baseball team is currently 7-10 on the season and 4-3 in the MASCAC. The Bears travel to Mass. Maritime on Tuesday afternoon for a four o'clock conference doubleheader with the Buccaneers.
