Baseball Drops 8-3 Decision to Johnson & Wales

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to host Johnson & Wales University on Friday afternoon at the SMG Athletic Complex.

The host Wildcats improve to 22-13 on the season, while the Bears fall to 14-18 overall.

Randy Frazier went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles to pace the visitors. Frazier double in a pair of runs to give the Bears a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ryan Feeney also added an RBI single and scored a run in the frame.

The would be all the scoring the Bears would muster in the contest.

Johnson & Wales tallied single runs in the first and second innings and then took a 5-3 lead with a three-run fifth.

The Wildcats put the game out of reach with three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Rob Ballinger went 3-for-5 with two RBI to pace the Wildcats' 14-hit attack. Lou Umberto and Dave Matthews also finished with multiple hits for JWU. Umberto was 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while Matthews finished 2-for-4 with a double, run and an RBI.

Keith Grant allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits over seven innings to pick up the win on the mound for the Wildcats. Grant (6-1) walked four and struck out four.

Kevin Bresciani was tagged with the loss for the Bears. Bresciani (0-3) gave up four runs on ten hits with two walks and two strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Both teams wrap up regular season play with conference doubleheaders on Saturday. The Wildcats travel to Anna Maria College (11:00 AM), while the Bears entertain Framingham State University (1:00 PM).
