Baseball Swept in MASCAC Twinbill

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The visiting Salem State University baseball team swept a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader against Bridgewater State University on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Park.

The Vikings (9-10-1, 4-0 MASCAC) posted a 6-3 victory in the opener and completed the sweep with a 1-0 win in game two. The Bears fall to 6-11 overall and 0-2 in the MASCAC with their seventh straight setback.

Sean Buckland (Lynn, Mass.) went the distance on the mound in game one for the visitors, Buckland (4-0) allowed three unearned runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

Jose Cedano (Lawrence, Mass.) went 3-for-3 with three doubles, two runs and two RBI to highlight the Vikings' 13-hit attack. Teghan Malionek (Salem, Mass.) also had three hits for the visitors as he was 3-for-4 with a run scored. Alex Toomey (Beverly, Mass.) finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Mike Davis (Peabody, Mass.) had two hits in three at bats with a run scored.

Travis Ritchie (Taunton, Mass.) finished 3-for-4 with an RBI to highlight the Bears' offense in game one. Ryan Feeney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) went 1-for-4 with a two-run single.

David Holmes allowed five runs (four earned) on five hit in six innings of work in the loss. Holmes (2-1) walked two and fanned seven.

The Vikings banged out 14 hits in game two with Dan Connors (Danvers, Mass.) leading the way with a 4-for-5, three RBI effort at the plate. Cedano added two more hits as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI.

Toomey also posted another solid performance at the plate. Toomey finished 2-for-3 with a double, a hit by pitch, three runs and three RBI. Richard Fecteau (Newbury, Mass.) chipped in with a pair of singles and a walk in four plate appearances with three runs and an RBI. Marc Daniel Singleton (Everett, Mass.) also finished with multiple hits for the Vikings as he went 2-for-4 and scored two runs.

Cato LaCroix (Holliston, Mass.) worked the first five innings to pick up his first win of the season. LaCroix gave up two runs on six hits and a pair of walks with six strikeouts. Michael Raymond (Peabody, Mass.) and Matt Abrain (Northbridge, Mass.) each tossed a scoreless inning of relief to close it out for the Vikings.

Reed Pike (Bellingham, Mass.) paced the BSU offense with two hits and two RBI in three at bats. Ritchie finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored.

Feeney singled in the third inning to extend his season-long hitting streak to 17 games.

Shane Surette (Haverhill, Mass.) pitched into the fourth inning in the loss. Surette gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Bears are back in action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Westfield State University for a noontime MASCAC doubleheader with the Owls.
