BSU Nine Blanked by Gordon, 6-0

WENHAM, Mass. -- Senior right-hander Scott Hall (Weymouth, Mass.) tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Gordon College baseball team to a 6-0 win over Bridgewater State University on Wednesday afternoon.

The Fighting Scots improve to 7-5 with the win, while the Bears slip to 6-6 on the season.

Hall scattered eight hits, walked one and stuck out seven as he improved to 3-0 on the season. He threw 123 pitches including 84 for strikes.

Senior Ryan Feeney (East Bridgewater, Mass.) and junior Brandon Hoyle (Bridgewater, Mass.) paced the Bears at the plate. Feeney went 3-for-4 with a double, while Hoyle was 2-for-2 with a walk and sacrifice bunt.

The Bears grounded into three double plays and left seven runners on base.

BSU junior lefthander Samuel Devine (Bourne, Mass.) suffered the loss on the hill. Devine (0-2) allowed six runs on ten hits over 6 2/3 innngs of work. He walked three, hit two batters and fanned seven.

Freshman lefthander Greg Cavaioli (Leominster, Mass.) gave up a pair of hits and struck out two in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Gordon put two runs on board in the bottom half of the second with junior Jeremy Jackson (Waco, Texas) getting things started with a inning-opening walk. Jackson advanced on a sacrifice bunt and went to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Chris Leavitt (Bridgewater, Mass.) walked with one out to set up back-to-back RBI singles by junior Ryan Paulsen (Latham, N.Y.) and freshman Christian Hodge (Waltham, Mass.), putting Gordon up 2-0.

The Scots tacked on another run in the sixth inning. Paulsen led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a balk and eventually scored on back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Hodge and freshman Daniel Quint (Wells, Maine).

Gordon took full control in the seventh inning by building up a 6-0 advantage. The Scots struck for three runs on four hits in the inning, including a two-out, two-run single by Hodge.

Five of Gordon's nine starters finished with multiple hits in the game. Paulsen went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Hodge finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3:30. The Bears host Wheaton College while the Fighting Scots entertain Mass. Maritime Academy.
