Baseball Falls to Curry, 8-2

MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated visiting Bridgewater State University 8-2 in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon in Milton.

The Colonels improve to 13-6 overall and are set to host Rhode Island College Thursday afternoon in non-conference action.

With the loss, the Bears fall to 5-14 on the season. Bridgewater will travel to UMass Dartmouth at 6:30 Thursday evening for another non-conference matchup.

Bridgewater opened the scoring in the top of the second. The Bears loaded the bases with two outs on a base hit by Nick White (Bellingham, Mass.), a double by Ryan Manning (Plainville, Mass.) and a walk to Anthony Licciardello (Haverhill, Mass.). Jacob Souza (Acushnet, Mass.) followed with an RBI single plating White from third. However, Manning was cut down attempting to score from second.

Bridgewater got another run in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of White driving in Scott O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.). The Bears had loaded the bases with one out on back-to-back singles by O'Brien and Billy Mitchell (Walpole, Mass.) and a Keaghan Austin-MacInnis (Lakeville, Mass.) hit by pitch.

The game would remain 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth when Kyle Connors (Stoughton, Mass.) doubled to left field scoring Derek Pizarro (Cambridge, Mass.) who reached on an infield hit.

Curry would tie the game at 2-2 the following inning, when Nick Crivello (Blackstone, Mass.) doubled down the left field line scoring freshman Evan Morris (Pembroke, Mass.), who singled to right earlier in the frame. After six full, the score was tied at two.

The Colonels took advantage of a BSU error to plate three runs in the bottom of the seventh on a bases clearing double by Tanner Givens (Hamden, Conn.).

Curry tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth. Pizarro singled in John Arens (Milton, Mass.) who had walked and stole second during Pizarro's at-bat. Connors would also drive in a run with a ground out plating Will De La Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) who was hit by a pitch. Freshman Anthony Sciaudone (York, Maine) singled to left field and would later score on a wild pitch.

Alex McLean (Eliot, Maine) would get the win after going six full giving up the Bears' only two runs of the game. McLean (2-1) scattered seven hits and walked one. David Griffin (Hanover, Mass.) tossed two scoreless innings in relief with three strikeouts, while Thomas Fitzpatrick (South Boston, Mass.) worked a scoreless ninth.

Ryan Hayward (Lynn, Mass.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bears. Hayward (0-2) allowed five runs, only two of which were earned, on eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

Pizaro went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI to lead the way for the Colonels, while Givens finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.
