Holmes Hurls Baseball to 7-0 Shutout of Westfield

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Right-hander David Holmes (North Easton, Mass.) tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Bridgewater State University baseball team to a 7-0 win over Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Westfield State University in game one of a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Park.

Game two of the twinbill was called due to rain in the middle of the fourth inning.

The Bears improve to 4-9 on the season and 1-2 in the MASCAC, while the Owls slip to 10-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Holmes (1-2) scattered eight hits, fanned three and did not issue a walk.

The Bears pushed across the only run they would need in the bottom of the third. Anthony Deleo (Athol, Mass.) reached on a throwing error to lead off the frame, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a base hit by Sean Brooks (Braintree, Mass.). Deleo would score on a fielder's choice groundout.

BSU took advantage of two more Westfield miscues in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.  The Bears tacked on two more runs in the fifth on a Keaghan Austin-MacInnis (Lakeville, Mass.) sacrifice fly and a Scott O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) RBI single.

Bridgewater added two more runs in the sixth and another in the seventh to put the game out of reach. Colin Ryan (Quincy, Mass.) led off the inning with a base hit, stole second and advanced to third when Brooks reached on an error. Three consecutive singles by Jacob Souza (Acushnet, Mass.), Travis Ritchie (Taunton, Mass.) and Nick White (Bellingham, Mass.) brought home Ryan and Brooks with the fifth and sixth runs of the game.

Souza went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI to highlight the Bears' eight-hit attack. Ritchie also had multiple hits as he finished 2-for-4 with a run.

Dan McCormack (Shelton, Conn.) and Jeremy Tanguay (Huntington, Mass.) each went 2-for-3 at the plate to pace the visiting Owls.

Peter Cassidy (Bluffton, S.C.) suffered the loss on the mound as he gave up four runs (two earned) on three hits and two walks.

Both teams are back in action on Thursday afternoon at 3:30. The Bears host the Wildcats of Johnson & Wales University, while the Owls travel to Springfield College to take on  the Pride.
