Baseball Falls to Greater Alleghenty, 9-4, to Wrap Up Florida Trip

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team completed its nine-game trip to Vero Beach, Florida with a 9-4 setback to Penn State Greater Allegheny on Friday morning.

The Bears went 3-6 on the trip, while the Lions finished 5-3.

Bridgewater State opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the top of the first on a pair of RBI singles by Nick White (Bellingham, Mass.) and Reed Pike (Bellingham, Mass.).

Penn State would answer with three runs in the bottom half of the first, four in the second and two more in the third to take a commanding 9-2 lead.

The Bears would plate a pair of runs in the sixth to account for the final score. Keaghan Austin-MacInnis (Lakeville, Mass.) doubled to lead off the inning and moved to third on Pike's base hit. Kevin Sugermeyer (Hampden, Mass.) followed with a pinch hit RBI single to score Austin-MacInnis.  After a walk to Sean Brooks (Braintree, Mass.) loaded the bases, Pike would come around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Drew Gentile (Lynn, Mass.).

Pike finished 3-for-3 with a walk, a run and an RBI to pace the BSU offense. Sugermeyer went 2-for-3 with an RBI off the bench, while Scott O'Brien (East Bridgewater, Mass.) also had multiple hits as he singled twice in four at bats, walked and scored a run.

All told, the Bears reached safely 18 times including 13 hits, but left 13 runners on base.

Matt Klena (Allison Park, Pa.) allowed fours runs on 12 hits in 7 1/3 innings to earn the win for the Lions. Klena (1-0) walked three and struck out four. He also hit a batter.

Dan Daly (Glassport, Pa.) came on with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth and got the last five outs of the game to record his first save of the season.

Trevor Brown (Rehoboth, Mass.) pitched well in relief for the Bears.  Brown hurled four scoreless innings giving up a pair of hits and three walks while fanning four.

Ryan Hayward (Lynn, Mass.) picked up the loss on the mound as he gave up three runs in an inning of work.

Offensively for Penn State, Gianmarco Concepcion (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) was on base four times as he singled, walked and was hit twice.  Concepcion also stole two base, scored two runs and drove in two. Troy Ambros (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) reached safely three times in five plate appearances as he tripled, walked and was hit by a pitch. Ambros scored three runs and knocked in one. Joshua Arroya (Toa Alta, Puerto Rico) went 2-for-4 with a walk, a run and two RBI.

Notes: White batted .344 (11-32) with a team-best 11 RBI in eight games during the trip...Travis Ritchie (Taunton, Mass.) led the team with a .419 batting average (13-31), four stolen bases and nine runs scored...O'Brien posted a .543 on base percentage as he went 8-for-24 (.333) with ten walks and a hit by pitch.
