Baseball Drops 10-1 Decision to UMass Dartmouth

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University baseball team dropped a 10-1 decision to visiting UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Park.  The game was stopped after eight innings due to darkness.

The host Bears slip to 5-10 with the setback, while the Corsairs improve to 5-7.

UMass used a five-run first inning to jump out to the early lead and never looked back.  The Corsairs added a run in the fourth and tacked on four more in the sixth to account for their scoring.

Four UMass pitchers combined to scatter 11 hits in the contest while allowing just the one run without issuing a walk.  Shawn Callahan (Colchester, Vt.) picked up the win in relief as he tossed three scoreless innings. Callahan (3-0) gave up five hits and struck out two.  UMD starter Steve Colella (Leominster, Mass.) worked the first three innings giving up one unearned run on four hits with two strikeouts.

Bridgewater State left ten runners on base including in seven in scoring position.

Ben Monteiro (Swansea, Mass.), Nate Farias (Fall River, Mass.), Ryan Medeiros (Acushnet, Mass.) and George Agostini (Dighton, Mass.) all finished with multiple hits to lead the Corsairs' 12-hit attack.  Monteiro went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI, while Farias finished 3-for-4 and scored a run.  Medeiros doubled twice in four at bats including a bases clearing two-bagger in the four-run sixth. He also scored two runs.  Agostini singled twice and walked in five plate appearances and scored a run.

Billy Mitchell (Walpole, Mass.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double to pace the BSU offense. The Bears' rookie leads the team with a .471 (8-17) batting average.  Ryan Manning (Plainville, Mass.) also finished with multiple hits for the hosts as he was 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles.  Kevin Sugermeyer (Hampden, Mass.) drove in the Bridgewater's lone run of the game with an RBI double in the second inning.

Brian Wiksten (Middleboro, Mass.) pitched well in relief of BSU starter Joseph Sever (Brockton, Mass.).  Wiksten did not give up a run in 2 2/3 innings of relief as he allowed three hits and struck out three.   Sever (0-1) suffered the loss on the mound as he worked the first 5 1/3 innings.

The Bears are back in action tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon when they travel to Johnson & Wales University to take on the Wildcats.  The Corsairs head to Worcester State University tomorrow afternoon for a 3:30 game with the Lancers.
