Baseball Splits Twinbill with RIC

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Rhode Island College on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Park.  The visiting Anchormen (5-8) won the first game, 8-2, while the Bears (4-6) earned the split with a 5-4 victory in game two.

In the opener, RIC used a six-run fourth inning to break open a scoreless tie as the Anchormen took advantage of two BSU errors in the frame.  Tyler Rains (North Kingstown, R.I.) drove in a pair of runs with a double in the inning while Dean Beshansky (Cumberland, R.I.) added a two-run single.

Rains finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run and three RBI in the game, while Justin Rainville (Cumberland, R.I.) went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Kyle Morvan (Smithfield, R.I.) went the distance on the mound for RIC as he improved to 3-0 on the season.  Morvan gave up two runs on seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

John Mulready (Rockland, Mass.) paced the Bears at the plate as he had two hits in three at bats and scored a run.

Ryan Hayward (Lynn, Mass.) allowed six unearned runs in 3 2/3 innings on the hill for Bridgewater.  Hayward (1-1) gave up five hits and walked four.

In game two, the Bears pushed across five runs in the first inning and held on for the 5-4 win.

Like their counterparts did in game one, the Bears capitalized on two fielding error in the big first inning.  Nicholas White (Bellingham, Mass.) opened the scoring with a two-run single, while Michael Lajoie (Acushnet, Mass.) added a two-run double in the frame.

Andy Sadoski (Harwich, Mass.) won his third straight start to open the season.  Sadoski (3-0) went the distance giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks while fanning three.

After the Anchormen cut the deficit to 5-4 with a pair of runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth, Sadoski retired eight of the next nine batters he faced before running into trouble in the seventh.

A pair of walks sandwiched around a single loaded the bases with two outs.  Sadoski worked out of the jam by inducing a harmless flyout to center to secure the win for the Bears.

Ryan Manning (Plainville, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Jacob Souza (Acushnet, Mass.) registered two hits in three at bats to lead Bridgewater's eight-hit attack.

After giving up five runs in the first inning, only two of which were earned, Brad Van Fechtmann (East Greenwich, R.I.) settled down and kept the Bears off the board the rest of the way.  Fechtmann (0-3) gave up eight hits and walked two while fanning two.

Sean Getman (Oneonta, N.Y.) went 1-for-2, scored two runs and drove in one to lead the RIC offense.  Matt Foley (Seekonk, Mass.) singled twice in four trips to the plate.

In upcoming action, the Bears host non-conference foe Curry College on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30.
