Baseball Splits Twinbill to Wrap Up Florida Trip

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State University baseball team wrapped up play in Vero Beach, Florida with a doubleheader split against the College of Saint Scholastica on Friday.  The Bears won the first game, 5-1, while the Saints earned the split with an 11-1 victory in game two.

Game 1: Bridgewater State 5, College of Saint Scholastica 1

Senior righthander Andy Sadoski (Harwich, Mass.) continued his solid pitching as the Bears put an end to the Saints four-game winning streak with the 5-1 victory in the opener.

Sadoski (2-0) gave up a run on 11 hits with a walk in two strikeouts in the complete game effort.  He stranded runners on base in each of the first six innings before retiring the side in order in the seventh to close out the win.

CSS stranded 11 runners on base in the seven-inning game. The Saints left runners at second and third in the first inning and had the bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings, but came away with nothing. Sadoski induced double play balls in both the third and fifth innings including a 1-2-3 double play with the bases loaded and nobody out in the fifth.

The Bears pushed across four runs in the second inning thanks in part to three CSS errors.  Billy Mitchell (Walpole, Mass.) knocked in a run with an RBI single and Jacob Souza (Acushnet, Mass.) added an RBI double in the frame.

A leadoff triple by Keaghan Austin-MacInnis (Lakeville, Mass.) in the third followed by a sacrifice fly off the bat of Brandon Hoyle (Bridgewater, Mass.) gave the Bears a 5-0 lead.

Padraic Getchell (Stillwater, Minn.) drove in the lone run for the Saints in the fourth as Mike Policano (Woodbury, Minn.) came into score.

Sean Brooks (Braintree, Mass.) paced the Bears offense as he reached safely in all four plate appearances with three walks and a base hit.  Mitchell finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Jordan Risse (Sioux Falls, S.D.) went five innings in the loss for the Saints, giving up only one earned run.  Risse (0-1) gave up six hits, walked three and fanned thee.  Tyler Duex (Bloomer, Wis.) went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the CSS offense.

Game 2: College of Saint Scholastica 11, Bridgewater State 1

In game two, the Saints used a seven-run third inning to pull away from the Bears and go on to win 11-1.

Getchell (1-1) went the distance on the mound, striking out five and scattering five hits to get his first win of the season.

CSS got two runs across in the top of the first on a RBI single by Risse and a RBI double by Trevor Bernsdorf (Meadowlands, Minn.).

Both teams exchanged runs in the second with Kevin Sugermeyer (Hampden, Mass.) knocking in the Bears' lone run of the game with an RBI single.

Bernsdorf had another RBI to begin the scoring in the third. Brian Minks (St. Cloud, Minn.) followed with a RBI single. Policano later scored on a wild pitch and Minks scored on an error. Jesse Heaton (Heyworth, Ill.) then had two-run double and Parker Olson (Duluth, Minn.) had a sacrifice fly totaling seven runs for the Saints as they led 10-1.

Minks' RBI triple in the fourth was the final scoring for the Saints.

Minks was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Bernsdorf, Risse and Heaton all had two hits for the Saints as well.

Brooks, Sugermeyer, Austin-MacInnis, Mitchell and Souza finished with one hit apiece for the Bears.

Kenny Pennini (Millis, Mass.) suffered the loss on the mound for BSU.  Pennini (0-2) allowed eight runs (six earned) on eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.  He struck out three and did not issue a walk.

Ryan Hayward (Lynn, Mass.) pitched effectively in relief for the Bears giving up a run on three hits with a strikeout in three innings of work.

Bridgewater wraps up its Florida trip with a record of 3-5.  The Bears travel to Brandeis University next Tuesday afternoon for a three o'clock game with the Judges.
