Baseball Drops 11-4 Decision to Suffolk

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Suffolk University baseball team posted an 11-4 victory over host Bridgewater State University on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Park.

Suffolk improves to 4-8-1 with the win, while Bridgewater slips to 7-8.

Suffolk jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Devan Jones (Roslindale, Mass.).  The Rams added a pair of runs in the third on an RBI ground out and an errant pick off throw.

Bridgewater cut the deficit to 3-2 in third as Sean Riley (Fairhaven, Mass.) led off the frame with his second home run of the season.  David Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass.) followed with a single and came around to score on Craig Stewart's (Brockton, Mass.) RBI double.

The Rams pulled away with a four-run fifth inning highlighted by a two-run double by Jhonneris Mendez (Boston, Mass.).  Jake Cintolo (Wrentham, Mass.) connected for a two-run homer in the sixth to make it a 9-2 ballgame. The Rams added two more runs in the seventh as James McConville (Medford, Mass.) singled in a run and later scored on a Bridgewater error.

Riley tripled and scored on a Pierce RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.  He also doubled home Tory Buck (Shelburne Falls, Mass.) with the Bears' fourth run of the game in the ninth.

Riley was just a single away from hitting for the cycle as he finished 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.  Pierce was 3-for-4 at the plate while Trevor Lawson (Easton, Mass.) went 2-for-4.

Cintolo (3-for-6), Jones (2-for-4) and Mendez (3-for-5) finished with two runs and two RBI apiece to pace the Suffolk offense.  McConville (2-for-5) also had multiple hits as the Rams banged out ten hits in the contest, walked seven times and were hit by a pitch twice.

Tim Belanger (Raynham, Mass.) hurled seven strong innings to pick up his first win of the season.  Belanger (1-1) allowed three runs on eight hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Jake Scott (Somerset, Mass.) pitched well out of the bullpen for the Bears as he hurled an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief with three strikeouts.

In upcoming action, Bridgewater hosts a twinbill with Rhode Island College on Sunday beginning at noon.  Suffolk travels to RIC on Saturday for a pair of games with the Anchormen also starting at noon.
