Baseball Drops Pair of Games to Husson

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --The Bridgewater State University baseball team dropped a pair of games to visiting Husson University in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Park.  Husson blanked the Bears in the opener, 3-0, and the Eagles completed the sweep with a 5-1 victory in game two.

Bridgewater falls to 6-7 on the season as the Bears have lost four straight games.  Husson improves to 3-6 with two wins as the Eagles snapped a modest four-game losing streak.

Nate Adams (Frankfort, Maine) tossed a complete game, three-hit shutout in game one to post his first win of the season.  Adams (1-2) gave up just three singles, did not walk anyone and struck out five. He retired the last 11 batters he faced.

Husson tallied an unearned run in the third and Niko Ververis (Plainsfield, Conn.) belted a two-run homer in the seventh to account for all the scoring.

Kenny Pennini (Millis, Mass.) pitched well in the loss for the Bears.  Pennini (1-1) went the distance allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

In game two, Pat McEwen (Brewer, Maine) limited Bridgewater to just one run on four hits in 6 2/3 innings of work to help the Eagles complete the sweep.  Despite walking six batters, McEwen (2-1) managed to keep the Bears off the board until giving up a run in the sixth inning.

Husson took advantage of three BSU errors to plate two unearned runs in the third.  The Eagles scored three times in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead as Josh Tardiff (Hampden, Maine) doubled home two runs and scored on a Cody McInnis (Bangor, Maine) RBI single.

Bridgewater cut the deficit to 5-1 in the bottom of the sixth on an Ian Williams (Taunton, Mass.) sacrifice fly.  The Bears had a chance for more in the frame as they loaded the bases with two outs.  McEwen avoided any further damage as he got Corey Batista (Fall River, Mass.) to pop out to second to end the threat.

Bridgewater loaded the bases again in the seventh with two outs on a Husson fielding error and a pair of walks.  However, Joe Stanevicz (Bangor, Maine) came on in relief of McEwen and got Williams to fly out to right field to end the game.  Stanevicz picked up his first save of the season.

Andy Sadoski (Harwich, Mass.) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bears in game two.  Sadoski (2-1) gave up five runs (three earned) on three hits and a pair of walks with four strikeouts in four innings of work.  Adam Mullen (Fairhaven, Mass.) hurled three innings of scoreless relief allowing one hit and three walks.

In upcoming action, the Bears travel to Brandeis University on Tuesday afternoon to take on the Judges at three.  Husson hosts New England College in a twinbill on Saturday beginning at noon.
