Baseball Falls to WNEC in Winner's Bracket Final, 11-4

HARWICH, Mass. -- No. 2-seeded Western New England College defeated No. 8 Bridgewater State University, 11-4, on Friday in the winner's bracket final of the 2011 NCAA Division III New England Regional Baseball Championship at Whitehouse Field.

WNEC will now advance to the regional championship round against an opponent to be determined.  Bridgewater will take on either Saint Joseph's or Wheaton in the loser's bracket final tomorrow at noon.

Western New England (41-9), ranked 24th in the coaches poll, jumped on the scoreboard with three runs in the third inning, then scored six more times from the fifth through the seventh.

Kyle McKelvey led the Golden Bears 17-hit attack by going 4-for-4. Ryan Dudzinski added two hits and had three runs batted in. Mike Rubino and Andrew Fatse both added three hits and Jason Leclerc had two.

Evan Michaud (8-0) picked up his eighth win of the season for the Golden Bears as he allowed just one run on six hits over six innings of work.

For Bridgewater (25-16), David Pierce had two hits and drove home the Bears' first run with a single to left field in the fifth. Corey Batista led the way for the Bears with three hits. Matt Greenberg, a pinch-hitter in the eighth, belted a triple off the right-field fence for the final three runs. The Bears rapped out 12 hits as a team.

Joshua Ferreira (2-2) suffered the loss on the mound for the Bears despite striking out nine in six innings.  Ferreira gave up eight runs on ten hits while walking three.  He also hit two batters.
