Baseball Downs UMass Dartmouth, 9-5, for Fourth Straight Win

NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team lost to visiting Bridgewater State, 9-5, in a non-conference game at the UMass Dartmouth Athletic Complex Thursday.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI single by junior Ian Williams (Taunton, MA). UMD answered in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by junior Dan DeMello (Taunton, MA) that scored senior Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA).

The Bears regained the lead in the second when sophomore Tyler Dennis (Stoughton, MA) doubled and scored on a RBI single by junior Corey Batista (Fall River, MA). In the top of the fourth, after being issued a walk and stealing second base, Bears senior Matt Greenberg (Norwell, MA) scored on a single by Batista, who later came around to score, giving BSU a 4-1 lead. Both teams added a run in the fifth inning.

The Bears dealt a crushing blow to the Corsairs in the top of the seventh when Greenberg blasted a three-run home run to deep centerfield, putting Bridgewater up 8-2. The Corsairs battled back scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh on RBI singles by McDermott and sophomore Ryan Levesque (Northbridge, MA).  BSU added an insurance marker in the top of the ninth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore David Pierce (East Bridgewater, Mass.).

The Corsairs had the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, but only scored one run on a bases-loaded walk to senior Matt Ryan (Uxbridge, MA), resulting in the 9-5 loss for UMD.

Sophomore Bryant Warner (Harwich, Mass.) picked up the win in relief of senior starter Billy Blaisdell (North Chelmsford, Mass.). Warner (1-0) gave up just one unearned run on three hits in three innings of work while striking out two.

Greenberg and Williams led Bridgewater's 15-hit attack with three hits apiece.  Greenberg finished 3-for-4 with two doubles to go along with his first home run of the season.  Batista, sophomore Keane Costa (Fairhaven, Mass.) and junior Dave Billotte (Norton, Mass.) added two hits each.

The Corsairs dropped to 10-16 with the loss, while the Bears improved to 14-11 with the win. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they host Western Connecticut State in a Little East Conference doubleheader Friday. Bridgewater State, winners of four straight games, will host Worcester State in a MASCAC doubleheader Friday.
