Baseball Drops 4-3 Decision to Curry

MILTON, Mass. – Curry College notched a come-from-behind 4-3 win against visiting Bridgewater State in non-conference baseball action Tuesday afternoon in Milton.

The Colonels improved to 12-15 on the season, while the Bears slipped to 9-10.

Bridgewater State put a run on the board in the first inning after Ian Williams (Taunton, MA) doubled to center field to bring home Joshua Ferreira (Fall River, MA). Curry responded in the bottom of the frame, taking a 2-1 lead on a Matt Drew (Waltham, MA) RBI single to right that scored Shayne McDonald (Cambridge, MA), and a Matt Rodriguez (Quincy, MA) sacrifice fly that brought home Kyle Connors (Stoughton, MA).

Both teams were then held scoreless until the ninth inning. Trailing 2-1 in the top of the frame, the Bears took the lead after a dramatic pinch-hit, two-run home run to left field off the bat of Corey Batista (Fall River, MA).

In the bottom of the inning with one out, David Stevens (Deerfield Beach, FL) singled to center. Matt O'Neill (Milton, MA) immediately followed with a single to right, advancing Stevens to third. After O'Neill stole second base, Brandon Lewis (Barrington, RI) reached on a fielder's choice, with Stevens beating the throw home to tie the game at 3-3. McDonald then grounded out to the catcher, but O'Neill broke for home on the throw to first and scored the game-winning run.

Mike Hughes (Middleboro, MA) got the start for the Colonels, giving up one run on three hits in four innings of work. Joe Carrig (Irvine, CA) picked up the win, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out five in five innings pitched.

Jim Balboni (Townsend, MA) received the start for Bridgewater State, going 6 1/3 innings and giving up two runs on four hits, while striking out five. Dave Billotte (Norton, MA) absorbed the loss, giving up two runs on two hits, while striking out four over 1 2/3 innings.

Curry resumes play on Thursday, hosting Babson College in a non-conference game with a 3:30 p.m. start. The Bears host Eastern Connecticut on Wednesday in non-league action at 3:30 p.m.
