Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Bridgewater State College baseball team opened the 2010 season with a split of a doubleheader versus New Jersey City University on Saturday afternoon at the RussMatt Dodgertown Invitational in Vero Beach, Florida.

The Bears dropped a 5-2 decision in the opener and earned a split of the twinbill with a 4-2 victory in game two.

In game one, the Bears committed three errors which led to three unearned runs.  New Jersey City jumped ahead early plating three runs in the first thanks in part to a key infield error.

New Jersey City added another run in the top half of the fourth before Bridgewater State got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded, two-run single by junior right fielder Greg Steele (North Dighton, MA). The Bears threatened for more in the inning as freshman center fielder John Garabedian (Mansfield, MA) followed with a walk to reload the bases with just one out.  A key pitching change ended the threat as the New Jersey City reliever induced an inning-ending double play groundout.

New Jersey City added an unearned run in the sixth off Bridgewater State junior starter Jeff Puopolo (Brockton, MA) to round out the scoring.

Puopolo went six innings allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits with five walks and five strikeouts.  Freshman Bryant Warner (Harwich, MA) hurled a scoreless seventh inning in his collegiate debut as he walked two and struck out one.

Garabedian paced BSC's ten-hit attack in his collegiate debut as he reached safely in all four plate appearances. He went 2-for-2 with a double and two walks.

Junior left fielder Ian Williams (Taunton, MA) and senior shortstop Brian Medairos (Brockton, MA) also had two hits apiece.

Junior right-hander Brian Guillotte went the distance in game two as the Bears earned the split with the 4-2 victory.

Guillotte (1-0) gave up two runs on seven hits in seven innings as he walked one and struck out five.

Bridgewater scored two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to provide Guillotte with the offensive support.

Williams had two more hits in the nightcap as he went 2-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI.  He doubled and scored in the fourth and singled in a run in the fifth.

Senior first baseman Tom Couet (East Freetown, MA) drove in Williams with an RBI single in the fourth.  Freshman catcher Keane Costa (Fairhaven, MA) plated the second run of the inning on an RBI groundout.

Senior third baseman Mark Claffey (Bellingham, MA) started the Bears scoring rally in the fifth with a one-out double.  Senior designated hitter Matt Greenberg (Norwell, MA) walked and Williams followed with his RBI single.  Steele then reached on an error to score Greenberg from second.
