Hatstat Hurls Bridgewater Past UMass Dartmouth, 9-2

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. --- Sophomore righthander Spenser Hatstat (Clinton, MA) allowed two runs in seven and a third innings of work to lead Bridgewater State College to a 9-2 victory over UMass Dartmouth in the Bear’s home opener this afternoon at Alumni Park.

The Bears improve to 6-2 on the season while the Corsairs drop to 1-10 with the loss.

Hatstat picked up his second win of the season in as many starts. He struck out four, walked one, while scattering nine hits.

Bridgewater spotted UMass a 2-0 lead as the Corsairs plated a pair of runs in the third inning. Sophomore Jeff Macchi (Franklin, MA-CF) drove in the first run on an RBI single. Freshman Ryan McDermott (Pembroke, MA-RF) came across with the second run of the inning as he scored on the back-end of a double steal.

Bridgewater cut the deficit in half with a run in the fifth on an RBI ground-out by senior outfielder Steve Smith (East Taunton, MA). BSC pushed across four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead highlighted by two-run triple by junior Brad Koneski (N. Dighton, MA-CF) and on an RBI single by sophomore Mark Claffey (Bellingham, MA-3B).

Junior Kenny Downey (Braintree, MA-2B) added another run for Bridgewater State with an RBI single in the seventh. The Bears then scored three more runs in the eighth highlighted by pinch-hit two-run double by senior J.T. Mooney (North Attleboro, MA-RF). Mooney would later advanced on an RBI single by Smith and he would come across to score the Bears third run of the inning on a throwing error.

Freshman Chris Contre (East Bridgewater, MA) suffered the loss on the mound for the Corsairs. Contre went five-plus innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out one and walking three. Bridgewater State scored six of their nine runs off of UMass relievers.

Koneski and Claffey each finished the game 3-for-4 for the Bears. Koneski scored a pair of runs and drove in two RBIs with his big triple in the sixth. Claffey also scored two runs and drove in one. Smith went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.

Macchi, Dave McGuire (Plainville, MA-3B) and Kevin Narey (Lynn, MA-C) each went 2-for-4 for UMass. McGuire scored a run while Macchi finished with the Corsairs only RBI.

The Bears will play their next game tomorrow at Alumni Park as they will entertain the Suffolk University Rams at 3 o’clock.
