Cass Leads BSU Women’s Cross Country at Suffolk Invitational

BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Naomi Cass (Westport, Mass.) placed seventh out of a field of 238 runners to lead the Bridgewater State University women's cross country team on Saturday afternoon at the Suffolk Invitational held at Franklin Park in Boston.

The Bears placed eighth overall in the team standings. Colby College captured the team title followed by Bowdoin College in second place and Wellesley College in third.

Cass covered the six-kilometer course in a time of 23:22.7. Junior Fransiscah Cherotich of AIC checked in with the winning time of 22:59.9.

Senior Nicole Major (Taunton, Mass.) was the next Bear to cross the line as she posted a time of 24:02.4 to finish 29th overall.

Junior Lily Valcovic (East Taunton, Mass.), junior Kate Brown (Acushnet, Mass.), and junior Elisabeth Sweeney (Marshfield, Mass.) capped off Bridgewater's top five runners at the meet. Valcovic recorded a time of 25:29.0 to place 70th, while Brown finished with a time of 27:03.6 to place 109th at the meet. Sweeney placed 126th overall as she crossed the line with a time of 27:52.4.

Cass, Major and Valcovic all posted personal-best times for a six-kilometer race. Brown was competing in a 6K for the first time in her career.

The BSU women's cross country team is off until Friday, October 27th when the Bears compete at the MASCAC Championships hosted by Worcester State University at the Fort Devens Course in Devens, Massachusetts.
