Volleyball Rolls to 3-0 Sweep of Lesley

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory (25-1, 25-6, 25-9) over visiting Lesley University on Wednesday evening at the Tinsley Center.

The Bears picked up their first win of the 2023 campaign to improve to 1-3 on the season, while the Lynx dropped to 0-3. The Bears are 4-0 versus the Lynx since the two teams first met in 2019.

Bridgewater notched 40 aces in the match including a school record-tying 14 by senior setter Bethany Votta (Cumberland, R.I.). Votta, who also added a match-best eight assists, equaled Jennifer Cedrone's single-season mark set back in 2001 against Becker College.

Sophomore right side Abigail Knight (Berkley, Mass.) collected four aces, while sophomore right side Meaghan Coutu (Brookline, N.H.) contributed four aces, two kills and two digs.

Sophomore middle hitter Lily Welch (Whitman, Mass.) and sophomore outside hitter Kim Gowell (Durham, N.H.) tallied a match-high five kills for the Bears, while sophomore outside hitter Sarah Brogioli (Milford, Mass.) added four kills, two aces and an assist, and senior outside hitter Abigail Reardon (Fairhaven, Mass.) notched four kills.

Freshman libero Jillian Donlan (Londonderry, N.H.), freshman opposite Sinead Thomas (Clayton, N.C.) and sophomore outside hitter Renee Hatch (Norway, Maine) tallied one kill apiece for the visiting Lynx. Sophomore middle blocker Emma Welch (Norton, Mass.) recorded an ace.

The Bears are off until next Wednesday when they travel to Gordon College for a seven o'clock match with the Fighting Scots. The Lynx travel to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday afternoon for a tri-match with Fisher College and the host Buccaneers starting at one.
