Volleyball Falls to Amherst & Conn. College at JWU Wildcat Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I.  -- The Bridgewater State University women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Amherst College and Connecticut College on Friday evening during day one action of the 2015 Wildcat Invitational co-hosted by Roger Williams University and Johnson & Wales University.

With the two setbacks, Bridgewater State slips to 1-5 on the young season. The Bears (1-6) return to Wildcat Invitational action on Saturday, September 12th at 10 a.m. against host Johnson & Wales, and Salve Regina University at 2 p.m.

Amherst 3, Bridgewater State 0 (25-7, 25-15, 25-18)

In their opening match on Friday, the Bears fell to Amherst by scores of 25-7, 25-15, 25-18. The game marked the season opener for the Jeffs.

Senior Lizzie Ahern led Amherst with nine kills, followed by eight from sophomore Marialexa Natsis, and seven each from juniors Maggie Danner and Nicole Gould. Senior Katie Warshaw added 15 digs to lead the Jeffs in the winning effort. Senior Nicole Carter dished out 19 assists, while junior Kate Bres added 12 assistst.

Junior Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) paced the Bears with six kills and ten digs, while classmate Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.) checked in with 18 assists, one ace and seven digs.

The Jeffs finished with a .322 hitting percentage, while the Bears posted a .057 attacking mark. Amherst also held a7-1 advantage in aces as well as a 7-2 edge in team blocks.

Conn. College 3, Bridgewater State 0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-12)

Maymon and senior outside hitter Clara Concalves (Dennis, Mass.) each finished with eight kills in the loss to Conn. College. Maymon added five digs and a solo block, while Goncalves tallied six digs. Panner assisted on 22 of the Bears' 25 kills, and freshman libero Cassidy Tyros (Chelmsford, Mass.) notched 18 digs.

Bridgewater gave up nine aces in the loss to the Camels, and finished with just three blocks. The Bears also checked in with a .135 hitting percentage.
