Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches at Union Invitational

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team suffered a pair of setbacks at the Union Invitational on Friday.  The Bears dropped a 3-0 decision (25-12, 25-19, 25-21) to host Union College, and lost to Skidmore College in five sets, three games to two (25-19, 27-29, 25-21, 17-25, 15-7).

Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.) paced BSU against Union as she notched nine kills, 14 digs, three aces and an assisted block.  Senior Sarah Mullarkey (Salem, Mass.), filling in for injured starting setter Charleyne Panner (Gilford, N.H.), added 23 assists, seven digs and an assisted block.

The Bears struggled on the attack in the match with Union, finishing with as many kills (26) as hitting errors.

Sophomore outside hitter Clara Goncalves (Dennis, Mass.) led the way in the 3-2 loss to Skidmore as she finished with a team-best 18 kills and a .348 hitting percentage to go along with a pair of assisted blocks.  Maymon chipped in with 14 kills, 18 digs and three blocks (one solo), while Mullarkey notched 43 assists and 18 digs.  Senior Rebecca Morse (Norton, Mass.) added 13 digs and a career-high six aces.

Bridgewater notched ten aces, 12 team blocks and a season-high 99 digs in the loss to the Throroughbreds.

The Bears (14-10) wrap up play at the Union Invitational on Saturday as they take on Susquehanna University at noon and Lasell College at two.
