Volleyball Drops 3-0 Decision to Colby-Sawyer

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Colby-Sawyer College posted a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-18, 25-20) over host Bridgewater State University in non-conference women's volleyball action on Wednesday evening at the Tinsley Center.

The visiting Chargers improve to 2-2 on the season with the win, while the Bears slip to 2-3.

Senior outside hitter Jackie Keating (Marshfield, Mass.) paced Colby-Sawyer with 12 kills, a .360 hitting percentage, nine digs and two aces, while junior setter Laura Smolinski (Hebron, Conn.) chipped in with 23 assists, four kills and two solo blocks.  Freshman Lexi Strong (Somersworth, N.H.) added 11 digs and three aces for the visitors, while freshman middle blocker Brenna Walczak (Lee, N.H.) notched nine kills and three solo blocks.

The Chargers finished with ten aces on the evening.

Bridgewater was led by sophomore setter Charleyne Panner's (Gilford, N.H.) 21 assists, seven digs and two kills as well as sophomore middle blocker Sydney Bennett's (North Attleboro, Mass.) seven kills, two aces and two blocks (one solo).  The Bears also received 12 digs and a pair of aces from senior libero Lisa Vega (Milford, Mass.), four kills and three blocks (two solo) from freshman middle hitter Christina Jaros (Plymouth, Mass.) and seven kills and six digs from sophomore outside hitter Hannah Maymon (Narragansett, R.I.).

In game one, the Chargers trailed 15-10 but responded to a timeout by reeling off ten straight points to change the complexion of the match.  The visitors would eventually take the opener, 25-22.

Colby-Sawyer held a slim 17-15 advantage in game two before using a 7-1 run to pull away.  The run was highlighted by kills from Walczak and senior outside hitter Stephanie Vecchio (Shelter Island. N.Y.) , and serving aces by Strong and junior outside hitter Kelsey Sullivan (Laconia, N.H.).  A kill by sophomore middle blocker Leah Drolet (Riverside, R.I.) would put the finishing touches on the 25-18 decision.

Bridgewater nearly erased a six-point deficit (18-12) in the third game as the Bears pulled to within one on two occasions.  The Chargers held off the comeback bid, however, and went on to secure the 25-20 win and a sweep of the match.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday.  The Bears travel to Mount Holyoke College for a tri-match with Saint Joseph College and the host Lyons.  The chargers head to the University of New England for a tri-match with Lasell College and the host Nor'easters. Both tri-matches get underway at one.
