Volleball Drops Pair of Matches at Gordon Tri-Match

WENHAM, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State University volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at a tri-match hosted by Gordon College on Saturday afternoon.

The Bears dropped a 3-2 decision to host Gordon in their opening match of the day, and then bowed to UMass Dartmouth, 3-1.

In the opener, Gordon overcame a 2-1 deficit and battled back to edge the Bears in five sets.  Match scores were 25-27, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18 and 15-7.

Michelle Atkins paced Bridgewater with ten kills and four blocks (one solo).  Melanie Appleman added 24 assists, two kills, two aces and nine digs, while Danielle Dean chipped in with ten kills, one aces and 19 digs.

As a team, Bridgewater finished with ten aces in the match led by five from Lisa Vega.  The Bears, however, also recorded 14 receiving errors, 14 blocking errors and managed only a .072 hitting percentage. 

After splitting the first two sets (25-22 and 20-25), UMass would take the final two sets 25-20 and 25-23 to secure their second win of the season over BSU.

Atkins posted another solid performance notching 11 kills, a .444 hitting percentage, one ace and three blocks (one solo).  Sarah Mullarkey registered a career high 29 assists to go along with 11 digs, while Dean finished with 11 kills, a pair of aces and 20 digs.  Julie Hutchins addeed six kills, one ace and three blocks (two solo).

Errors would haunt Bridgewater in the loss to the Corsairs as the Bears recorded 12 serving errors, ten receiving errors, 12 blocking errors and three ball handling errors.
