Volleyball Posts 3-1 Win at Regis

WESTON, Mass. – The Bridgewater State University volleyball team won their third straight match as the Bears downed host Regis College, 3-1, on Thursday evening.

Bridgewater evens its 2012 record at 4-4 with the victory, while Regis slips to 2-9 on the season. 

The Bears won the first set 25-22 before the Pride tied the match up with a 26-24 decision in set two.  The visitors then closed things out with a 25-21 victory in the third set and a 26-24 win in set four.

Junior setter Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) paced the Bears with a match-high 35 assists to along with nine digs and an ace.  Appleman also posted a .312 hitting percentage and notched six kills.

Junior hitter and defensive specialist Danielle Dean (Gilford, N.H.) added 14 kills and 25 digs for BSU, while freshman outside hitter Carolyn Morin (Marstons Mills, Mass.) registered 11 kills, three aces and nine digs.  Junior libero Kristen Robillard (Swansea, Mass.) chipped in with 22 digs.

Junior libero Sara Gold (North Hollywood, Calif.) posted nine kills and 26 digs for Regis, while junior middle hitter Vanessa Noesi (Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic) finished with 12 kills as well as three assisted block.  Junior outside hitter Julie Endara (Boca Raton, Fla.) also filled the scoresheet for the Pride as she registered six kills, four aces, 17 digs and five assisted blocks.  Freshman setter Soraia Pinto (Brockton, Mass.) added 26 assists and 13 digs.

In the final set of the match, there were 12 ties and four lead changes.  With the score even at 24-24 in the fourth set, a Gold attacking error gave Bridgewater a 25-24 advantage.  Dean then closed out the set and the game with a cross-court kill.

Gold recorded her 1,000th career dig in set four.

The Bears, who are off this weekend, return to the court next Thursday when they host UMass Dartmouth at 6:00 PM.  Regis competes in the Husson Invitational this weekend.
