Volleyball Drops Pair of Matches to Smith, MIT

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Bridgewater State volleyball team dropped a pair of matches to Smith College and MIT during day two action at the Hall of Fame Invitational held at Smith.

The Bears (8-19) dropped a 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 25-19, 17-25, 15-12) back-and-forth decision to host Smith in their first match of the day and fell to MIT by a score of 3-0 (25-7, 25-12, 25-17). Bridgewater finished 0-3 at the invitational.

Sophomore Kristen Robillard (Swansea, Mass.) earned All-Tournament honors for the Bears.  Robillard totaled 43 digs in the three matches over the weekend including 21 against Smith and nine versus MIT.  She also notched a pair of kills and an ace in the loss to Smith.

Sophomore middle hitter Michelle Atkins (Chelsea, Mass.) tallied nine kills and four solo blocks to pace the Bears in the match with Smith.  Sophomore setter Melanie Appleman (Hyannis, Mass.) notched 36 assists, five kills, eight digs and an ace while classmate Danielle Dean (Gilford, N.H.) recorded 11 kills, four aces and 15 digs.  Sophomore Emily Boyer(Stockbridge, Mass.) also chipped in with 11 kills and six digs and sophomore middle hitter Shayna Carmichael (Westport, Mass.) added eight blocks (six solo), three kills and a pair of aces.

Boyer finished with four kills against MIT, while Appleman posted seven assists, one kill, two aces and six digs.

Bridgewater will travel to Westfield State University on Wednesday night for a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) match with the Owls.
